I think another piece of the puzzle that lead to the fallout is that the Lauren used her negative post of the movie Sicko to promote a product by her company.
From story on Google in SFGate.

Health care companies, she suggested, should buy Google ads to counter the unfair attacks.

Reaction to her comments lit up the blogosphere with outrage at Google for taking sides and for failing to acknowledge problems with the nation's health care system. More than a few bloggers accused Google of violating its "Don't be evil" motto by staking a position that they disagreed with.

I think using the negative comments to promote a Google ads, helped create the problem. This is a perfect example how it can really backfire to speak / post negatively about another product or company to promote your own.

Well, some people might want to buy viagra [HEY, NOT ME!] so they should have some results though I'd agree they have many spammy ads in most sectors. I'm most frustrated by the generic ads from big players that don't match to real content at the other end. This is a clear violation of Google's stated ad policies but is overlooked by Google for many queries, presumably because it helps the bottom line.
