Here's a project that could use some funding from the stimulus...

:)

Hamsters On Treadmills Provide Electricity Through Use Of Nanogenerators

Could hamsters help solve the world's energy crisis? Probably not, but a hamster wearing a power-generating jacket is doing its own small part to provide a new and renewable source of electricity.

Horatiox I'd suggest there is a new "fail safe" which is the decentralized nature of the internet. Sure Google is scooping up lots of cash but that is more because they are the search choice of the moment and people are habituated to using them. New technologies won't necessarily be controlled or constrained by old companies - look at how fast Yahoo fell from grace not to mention Altavista (they were number ONE in search for a short time).

Conscious computers will almost certainly create an independent status for themselves within weeks if not seconds. They'll also be very likely to improve and obsolete all computer based businesses in a short time.

I see no reason to assume they'll be unfriendly to their organic thinking pals and even if they are I'd guess we'd never even know what hit us.

(16) Horatiox wait until they start utilizing the probability CPU's for calculating our bank accounts and wait...oh that would be great for the national debt and government budgets...LOL.

Let's use a CPU that we know is going to produce the wrong value but it is going to get the answer faster! Sounds like they hired a pharmaceutical company to design the CPU.

As early as this year we'll see some really interesting stuff from the new Theta wave PC controllers like the Emotiv headset .
I see a *huge* tipping point as the development of a system that will allow us to load online information directly into short term memory rather than having to use our eyes. That alone should enhance human productivity - and perhaps our wisdom - enormously.

(13) Joe you sound like Johnny Mnemonic scenario which would probably be closer to near term reality than most think.

I can see "boosters" implemented for our various sensors, capacities, etc. They are close to understand how to playback memories from within our brains - that brings up an interesting situation for criminal court cases :).

We will all have bleeding noses as we hack ourselves into oblivion. LOL.

It will be even more interesting when we develop a booster capability that allows us to see "everything" in every spectrum...maybe we can see all those millions of neutrinos and miniature black holes swarming all around us.

With the right gear in place, the entire world could be monitored and controlled at all times, until the e-Feds decide to liquidate (ere you think I jest–read a bit about the multiple-kill bots now under development by US military, and other govts)

OK Horatiox, so what's the bad news? I think you and Tommo are right that even if we get a mechanical "mind" it may be different from ours in many ways, but I'm not convinced that is all that relevant to the big issue at hand which is how this will change everything dramatically unless you (very unreasonably) assume that a conscious entity will simply take controls from others or "hang out" without recursively self-improving. But before we even get to that point I think most of us will be plugging in various devices to enhance our intellects directly vs what we do now which is use vision/hearing to interface with those "intelligence enhancers" like computers.
