Travel Websites:
I love Kayak for the ability to compare across many other sites (like Orbitz) and thousands of properties. You should always check other sites as well because of quirks with flight dates, etc, but Kayak is generally my first stop when planning my travel.
You won’t know the property until you book, but in my experience Hotwire offers the best rates of all the online sites. However in some cases (e.g. Las Vegas), you may really need to know where you’ll be and deals change so fast you may want to stick to those where you know the situation.
Although it’s time consuming the best strategy in my opinion is to start with Kayak to find out a lot about several options, then compare with some others and last with Hotwire to see if the Hotwire “grab bag” approach is going to save you enough to take the minimal risk and no cancellation policies.
Like any of the reservation big players, Expedia may have better (or worse) deals then you’ll get directly from the hotel or other consolidators.
