Oh, Shenandoah

Surprised to find that Oh Shenandoah, the beautiful haunting song which is the official song of Virginia, has origins outside of the Shenandoah Valley.

Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you,
Away, you rolling river
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Away, I’m bound away, cross the wide Missouri.

Oh, Shenandoah, I love your daughter,
Away, you rolling river
Oh, Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Away, I’m bound away, cross the wide Missouri.

Oh, Shenandoah, I’m bound to leave you,
Away, you rolling river
Oh, Shenandoah, I’m bound to leave you
Away, I’m bound away, cross the wide Missouri.

Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you,
Away, you rolling river
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you
Away, I’m bound away, cross the wide Missouri.

  1. It’s an American song. It’s not an offical song about anythng. It’s about a longing for back home when you cannot go home again. It’s about an American spirit that leads brave people to settle the plains, cross deserts, and build cities; people from humble surroundings like the Shenandoah or the Cumberland (not Lords and Ladies of Europe). It’s a purely American song. In it are the love of home and hearth, the pioneering adventure, the hope of better days to come and the freedom to love and to cherish and to value.
