Kim Family update as of 11pm Sunday

[Kati and Kids are safe, James still missing as of 11pm Monday] Updates here.

Updates Monday Morning:

Kim Family Search continues with about 20 (CNET report says 40) searchers and helicopters covering all possible routes to the Coast from Roseburg.

I’m confused about this but assuming the police have rejected as false the report of a Carene Williams of Bandon that she saw the family Nov 27 at Port Orford Price and Pride at 5:12pm. She posted a detailed note at the family site Jamesandkati.com I found a phone for her as part of a house for sale listing in Bandon, Oregon but it’s disconnected and no reply to my emails to her.

Tonight KOBI Channel Five out of Medford reported several new items in a confusing way. I’ll hope to have better detail tomorrow.

3 choppers out of Merlin, hired by Kim’s (father?) continued to search over at the coast. The pilot referenced a report of the family asking for directions in Port Orford (about 30 miles N. of Gold Beach on Highway 101) but it sounded like this report was not clearly about the Kim family. The reporter went on to say Roseburg was the last sighting.

A cell phone “hit” on a tower near Glendale. Authorities appeared to believe this was not enough reason to have them refocus the search in that area.

This was posted by a guest on the www.jamesandkati.com site:

I saw the Kim family at Price and Pride Market on Monday Evening the 27th Of November at 5.12p.m.. I have reported this to the Hotline No. and man y police station s, there were two other sightings at Langlois and The Shell Gas Station in Port Orford. I am so sad and frustrated because I had contact with them and thought what A Wonderful, gracious family. Please God let them be found safe and sound. Carene Williams. cloudsntrees@msn.com

This note explains the reference on tonight’s news to a Port Orford sighting. If true they made it to the coast and spent nights there before going missing, though this seems odd with no cell phone or credit card use. I’m asking Carene via email for more details.

Update: no reply on the email to Carene. I found a number for her via Google search for a house she was selling in Bandon but phone disconnected.

  1. Joe,

I just wanted to let you (and everyone else) know that some friends of the family have a site up. It’s been updated to include an email link to try and help coordinate volunteer searches:

    from http://www.jamesandkati.com:

“There are several family and friends in the Oregon area who have joined in the search for the Kim family – we greatly appreciate this help! We have also received notes from Oregon residents who are helping. Please email us with details of areas that you have searched so that we can help to provide information about well searched areas to the family and to volunteers asking us where to help. Please do not put yourself into any situation which may compromise your own safety.”

    email address: search (at) jamesandkati.com

  2. I’m confused. This was posted by a guest on the http://www.jamesandkati.com site:

  3. Mishka that note explains the reference on tonight’s news to a Port Orford sighting. If true they made it to the coast and spent nights there before going missing, though this seems odd with no cell phone or credit card use. I’m asking Carene via email for more details.

  4. James and Kati would have at least called the inn they were going to stay in if they decided to stay somewhere else. It’s not adding up…

  5. I agree mishka but “Carene” sure sounded confident. I can’t find her yet in phone books.

OK, just found a number via “Carene Williams” Google search. I’ll call her tomorrow.

  6. Joe,
Probably already investigated but I was wondering since he was a gadget guru, which (if any) portable car navigation system he may have had. (like tomtom…) If he had one, it may be something to look at the routes, roads, that system would have suggested (especially if he were lost on the route you were suggesting) Just a thought that wouldnt go away…

  7. It’s good thinking Tara but based on my talk with the searcher who knows the family the car did not have a navigation system and it sounded like they assume he didn’t have one with him in the car (that seems odd though).

I was at Circuit City yesterday and ran a few searches on a couple GIS systems to confirm those systems might send you up into that area (yes, they might). In fact even now if you use Mapquest and say “do NOT show seasonally closed roads”, it WILL show those roads.

  8. I can understand the logic of not phoning the hotel had they indeed made it to the coast, but decided not to stay at that hotel for example.

The hotel office was closed and they knew that based upon their prior phone call with the innkeeper. They could have decided to stay somewhere else. Maybe they were very tired and pulled into the very first motel they on the coast, rather than go to the orginial destination hotel.

I cannot totally discount Carene William’s account in my mind, however I am dubiou0s since the contact information that she posted is not verifiable.

  9. Jeremiah that report might relate to the “hit” on the tower at Glendale area reported on news last night. My understanding is that they do not have any specific locations yet.

  10. from:

    http://kdrv.com/content/contentID/15164

“New information on the missing family is leading the search back to the Bear Camp area in Josephine County.

A cell phone tower received a signal from one of the family’s cell phones last saturday near Glendale, but officials say the signal is only an indicator the family could have been within 26 miles of Glendale late Saturday night. “

  11. just wondering if you ever found anything else about that carene williams character… she is up too her old tricks again (see post #725) on the family’s guest book. you can see my reply post (titled: “uhh, what?”) to her bizarre message there too.

  12. Shauna all I found was a posting in Google for a house for sale with her name and same email. The listed phone was disconnected. I passed this along to family helpers who told me that the reports from the coast (which we now know were false), had enough inconsistencies that they were skeptical.

  13. Our family would like you to know that we are sending prayers your way to give you comfort and support as you go through this terrible time in your life.
