Did you thank your kid today for all the money they’ve been loaning you?

As a supporter of many of the changes President Obama has brought to our national table it’s painful to watch so many folks simply back away from the next glaring financial catastrophe which makes the last one look like a walk in the park.    It’s the massive US national debt and massive deficit spending that has been going on now for over a decade, though never on the scale of the coming years.

Ironically this is a problem all of us were talking about a *lot* before the economy melted down, and even before the GW Bush era of what is best called “fake conservatism”  doubled the national debt.    President Bush was able to push his irresponsible spending down the pike to Obama thanks to inheriting  a very robust Clinton era economy, keeping folks happy with tax cuts, and claiming the war spending was essential to preserve our freedom.   Where a handful of real fiscal conservatives cried foul, legions of fake conservatives stayed silent and followed the leads of the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity who suckered the gullible into focusing on the lies and distortions that fueled the Bush v. Gore,  Bush v.  Kerry, and McCain v. Obama campaigns.   Power was far more important to all the parties than sound principles of governance, spending, or national policy.

Now it’s Obama who is able to ignore the massive spending and debt because the economic meltdown he inherited from Bush has trumped concerns for the debt. and some form of stimulus is certainly called for according to almost all economists.

Thankfully the massive Obama spending stimulus appears to be bringing us out of recession though it’s not clear at what future cost.     In politics it’s hard for parties and Presidents to look too far past the big power curve, and in my view Obama and the Democrats won’t even work hard to undertand the implications of spending themselves past the 2012 elections and then they will just hope for a miracle.   More likely than a miracle is that we’ll see very high inflation as  the Government is virtually forced to print money to repay obligations since the tax rates required to repay the anticipated debts will be totally unsupportable and unsustainable.

Another irony of the situation is that all those formerly quiet “conservatives” are now quite reasonably suggesting we’re creating a new financial catastrophe, but the concerns are falling on deaf Democratic ears because these same people were not critical of their own political allies back when they did have a voice and they tend to blend in nonsense talking points (birth certificates, communist agendas, etc, etc) about Obama and the Democrats.

So, when you hug your son, daughter, niece or nephew today be sure to tell them “thanks for the money”  because they have been loaning you a LOT of money for the past ten years, especially this last one.   Many tens of thousands and growing hugely each year.

We’re stealing our kids prosperity away.   The least we can do is say “Thank you”.

P.S.   The solution to all this is remarkable simple.   After a few years of stimulus deficit spending the government should be required to lower spending to balance the budget over the following few years.  Our current massive entitlement and defense spending could sustain 100% of the required cuts to balance the budge without any significant diminished standards of living for Americans.

IMPORTANT:  Few of the comments below represent my views, but I avoid censoring politics here so I’ve chosen not to delete the many off topic comments.   I’m reconsidering that policy because much of the material below is, in my view, not helpful to any rational discussion of these topics.

    Remember Obama said…pass the stimulus now or unemployment will go beyond 8%…well in the emergency they passed it and look where we are.

    They are adjusting the numbers to eek out any sign of positive movement but it is all a farce and will come tumbling down soon.

    Did you see what the Fed did last week? The last bond round we sold to foreign governments 7 year notes…and less than 10 days later the Fed bought nearly 50% of those bonds back…do you know what they call that?

    Our Fed monetizing our debt…and you know what that means…they are just printing trillions of dollars…never in the history of economics has a government recovered from this type of monetizing…wake up…don’t believe anything coming out of the Obama White house – Welcome to Chicago politics at a national level.

    Obama will go down in history was the worst president this country has ever had.

    Hypocrisy, lies, corruption, arrogance, spamming…the regular folks with common sense wholly reject.

  7. Glenn I’m still supportive of Obama as an excellent global leadership figure. The few corruption charges I’ve seen are complete nonsense. Big money flows all over the place and you can always look for any number of connections and they usually have nothing to do with corruption. In fact if folks had been listening to Soros’ investment warnings rather than fretting over his left wing politics we’d have dodged some of the big problems caused by the banking fiascos of the past few years. Soros saw this coming, told people, and then profited from the fact GW’s gang who presided over the banking collapse ignored his predictions.

    Now, Obama is probably going to have to curtail the massive Govt spending but I think he’ll be doing that as soon as the recovering starts to firm up – a process that appears to be happening much faster than even he anticipated.

    So far I think you’ve got to give Obama an A for Stimulus Economy, C for long term budget, A for foreign policy, and A+ for style.

  13. Glenn the criticism of the TARP and Stimulus programs would be more convincing if the markets were not showing a lot of confidence that we have in fact bought our way out of this. I’m skeptical that we are “solving” most of the problems as opposed to just pushing them forward, but the case that we’d be “better off right now” if there had been no bailouts is not reasonable at all. The predicted market meltdowns have not happened and we are seeing many signs of a robust recovery within a few years. I’m surprised this has worked so well, but it appears to have worked.

  15. Joe according to Obama’s own words the stimulus has failed…he said and quite clearly…if we don’t pass the stimulus unemployment would go beyond 9% and it has…so why isn’t there any accountability for claims like that?

    The GM bailout cost over $400k per job saved…is that how we want to do things in this country? Does anyone believe a bailout helps anyone except the special interest groups that Obama is paying off because they helped swindle America and get him elected?

    Look at how much of a disgrace the Democratic party is now…Kennedy’s corpse hadn’t even assumed room temperature yet and people like Pelosi are exploiting his death.

    The Foxnews hype doesn’t bother me nearly as much as this proposed “cybersecurity” bill does (with one of those curious Rockefeller boys behind it). That does look rather Orwellian –though I believe it has bipartisan support. I have not noted much discussion of this, though I hope the EFF has taken note (and the EFF tend to be sort of non-partisan, thank Osiris).

    Most of the leading “Democrats” (Feinstein, Hillary, Biden, Pelosi, etc) have had no problem joining the GOP and supporting these sorts of “enhanced security measures”. J-Edgar worked for both GOP and Demo admins (the Kennedy bros, those supposed great liberals, often blessed J-Edgar and McCarthyite like policies, at least until RFK’s demise).

BO’s even nixed the “public option,” which most of the Demos support in some form or another (ie the Leahy reform plan). Because DDT at that point had saved the lives of over 500 million people in the world – they couldn’t have that…so now in Africa over 2 million children die each year of disease that DDT would have prevented.

      To put the final nail in the environmental coffin two scientists from that right wing whacko school UofC Berkeley did extensive tests with DDT on humans…literally fed DDT directly to test subjects every day for 18 months (the amount ingested every day equalled 15X’s the normal annual exposure), after 18 months – NO SIDE EFFECTS, after 10 years – NO SIDE EFFECTS…

      However the environmental movement achieved their goal – population control – by attacking something that interferes with their insane views.

  51. Congressman Stark at first responded quietly and intelligently to the Janster and obviously knows a bit more about budget issues than Jan. After a few minutes of fairly inane questions Stark became upset, yet asking Jan if he was a professional economist, etc. (which he obviously isn’t) was fairly reasonable. Jan kept needling the congressman with “but what about the national debt”????, and finally upset him. I don’t see any great Foxnews story (if anything, it backfired on Jan).

    • But isn’t that the exact problem…governments have construed their own form of economics not based on sound business practice but on manipulation because they believe they can control anything they want.

      If we had a government that ran a balanced budget, etc and you know just happen to have to say No once in while to an expenditure and the elected congressmen didn’t have to worry about paying off their special interests that keep getting them elected…

      The entire point is our country is being destroyed by special interest groups. It is not about the 65%, 75%, 85% …it is about the 5% to 15% and catering to every single one of their needs even if they are not legally living here – and they do that because they want to lock in the these people for votes.

      Look at the decisions, look at this cast of characters…read the constitution and see how far our country has drifted from it and then look how the in-power radical left want to take it.

      People like Holder, Holdren, Sustein, Soros, Rathke etc…are very bad for this country – they have a very radical view of existence and even have a more radical view on what they think they should be able to control in our lives.

      Most Americans want to be left along, given a fair chance and want to shoot for dreams, etc…

        I doubt we can deliver it cheaper than China does, so that’s one reason for the penalties/tariffs, etc., so that the cheaply-produced chinese goods (can we say Walmart) don’t leave the US products on the shelf. As a consumer, I do think it’s a bit inconvenient, yet I can understand the need to protect American workers–and companies. It’s a perspective thing: do you buy a Hyundai, or Chevy? etc. Obama’s probably just following orders from some Chevy execs, anyway.

ACORN has been investigated numerous times for corruption, and even fraudulent voter registration.         My view is that we should not be calling Wilson racist for the shameful outburst and it’s not reasonable to label Jimmy Carter a racist *now* though sadly many Americans would have fit that definition in the 1930s. Most of the current flap should have ended with Wilson’s apology to President Obama.

        I’m not up on Wilson’s past but I think a lot of folks feel that sympathy for “states rights” is sympathy for racism and that is not usually the case, though it’s also naive to think there is not a lot of lingering racism in the USA, especially the deep south. I’d hoped Obama’s election would smarten up the “race in America” discussion rather than heat it up, but that was naive of me.

    General Electric may be the company with the closest ties to the Obama administration (if not, GE is second only to Goldman Sachs), and here we see the company benefiting from an abrupt foreign policy change made by President Obama. But GE isn’t the only company benefiting. Reuters paints the broader picture:

    “U.S. companies have arguably lost out to some European companies in joint ventures, and better diplomacy will likely improve the chances for investors in the strategic sectors of the Russian economy,” said Carlo Gallo, senior Russia analyst at London-based consultancy Control Risks.

    A lot of people have seen this coming almost two years. Once you understand it…you can see the impact to the country and everyone should stand up against this form of tyranny. The spending approach is key to their goals – they need to spend us to oblivion to force their agenda on the American people.

  90. Happened last week…

    This morning House Financial Services Committee chairman Rep. Barney Frank held a hearing on H.R. 1479, the “Community Reinvestment Modernization Act of 2009.” The bill’s purpose is “to close the wealth gap in the United States” by increasing “home ownership and small business ownership for low- and moderate-income borrowers and persons of color.” It would extend CRA’s strict lending requirements to non-bank institutions like credit unions, insurance companies, and mortgage lenders. It would also make CRA more explicitly race-based by requiring CRA standards to be applied to minorities, regardless of income, going beyond earlier requirements that applied solely to low- and moderate-income areas.

    These clowns are just simply insane…!!!

    • Obama’s mandatory health insurance proposal does not sound so great. Requiring people to buy health insurance, like liability insurance?? That’s hardly democratic or progressive: more like a type of corporate welfare –and unlikely it will be of much assistance to the po’ or underemployed. And the Demo regs have barely raised their voices. Even the Leahy sort of mixed plans, with a public option, seem more workable.
