Shaming and blaming and the tragic death of James Kim

Over at Salon.com, Sarah Keech has a thoughful article about the Kim Family story, though I read it as a somewhat too defensive reaction to the letter from James’ Kim’s father Spencer published in the Washington Post last week.

In “Who’s to Blame for James Kim’s Death” Keech suggests, correctly in my view:

It’s not the federal government or law enforcement or the people who tried to rescue him from the Oregon wilderness.

Ironically, Spencer Kim would probably agree with her statement.   I’ve been concerned at the tone of many locals who have suggested a father, grieving his son no less, has no right to suggest that better maps, signs, gates and policies might have kept this from happening. Of course he has that right and his letter was in my opinion quite a reasonable reaction given that Mr. Kim has just lost his son to an unforgiving Oregon winter wilderness.

I know this area well and it’s common knowledge that signs on the Bear Camp Road could use improvement.   Money and priorities are legitimate issues with such improvements as are the rights people have to access to public lands.     A route that would be fine for an experienced hunter with 4WD Truck, chains, winter gear and provisions may become a death trap for a family car.

Here’s my reply to the Salon article:

Ms. Keech you have made several good and several obvious points about the folly of legislating solutions on the basis of unusual and tragic events, but that’s not the big story of the Kims tragic trip into Oregon’s Rogue River Wilderness. I think Spencer Kim’s letter is a reasonable characterization of the many challenges facing the search effort, though I agree the solutions suggested are far too expensive to justify the handful of lives this might save over many years. Better to spend on life saving measures that have a much higher return on the investment of tax dollars.

But that is _not_ the big story here!

As a southern Oregon local and long term resident of the region the Kim Family story capitivated me from the beginning. This interest has become almost obsessive as I blogged the event – almost play by play – as “Joe Duck”.

The Kim story is the triumph of a mother and children surviving the wilderness after nine days, and a father heroically challenging that wilderness in an unsuccessful, tragic hike to save them. It’s the story of an enormous and sometimes heroic search and rescue effort that was well intentioned at all times, but plagued by many of the bureaucratic forces that are likely to be proposed as the solution to future problems in Oregon. Perhaps more than anything the Kim Story is remarkable because it has touched the lives of millions around the world, millions who saw in the Kim’s happy family their own family and the life-shattering consequences of a single wrong turn on what appeared to be a passable road.

PodTech Bloghaus with Robert and Maryam = glimpse into future of reporting = very cool

Although Apple’s release of the iPhone at MacWorld sort of stole the show away from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year, I think PodTech / Scoble’s brilliant idea of setting up a “Bloghaus” at CES is one of the neatest conference ideas to come out in a long time.

Unlike some of the other early bloggers, Robert Scoble has been a strong advocate for the powers of blogging as cornerstone of commerce. His book with Shel Israel, “Naked Conversations”, was an excellent introduction for corporate suit people to blogging’s significance and also to blogging’s importance to a smart corporate strategy.

Many of the suits are still fretting about this and failing to grasp the obvious, but Robert’s new gig, PodTech, is proving a leader in innovative blogging, and I think the CES Bloghaus has set a new standard in the effectiveness of alternative reporting approaches and frankly what a “cheap date” good bloggers will prove to be. One prominent blogger wrote down there that he was heading over to bloghaus because he was running low on cash. “Feed me”, he begged. So for the price of a few beers and Pizza bloghaus gets a good writer and a good plug. And that’s good! I’d sure like to see a bloghaus at the next conference I attend. Sure, you can blog from anywhere at the conference with your laptop and WIFI, but wouldn’t it be more fun to be hangin’ at the ‘haus?

I’d like to compare some of the professional reporting coming out of CES with the blog reports. In other venues blogging generally wins, offering personal insight and expertise rather than a superficial skim of the topic. Also, bloggers tend to speak more frankly so you avoid the sort of “legally / commercially sanitized” fluff that sometimes constrains are reporter’s ability to tell the real story.

Bravo Podtech! Bravo Robert and Maryam and your team down there at CES. I only wish I could have been writing this … from there!

Time’s Person of the year … is YOU!

Time Magazine 2006 Person of the Year

Time gets it right naming you, me, and everybody else in the exploding online community the person of the year.   The power of the community internet aka “Web 2.0” is the big story now and for many years to come as millions more flock online every week to surf, buy, blog, meet, marry, and much more.

Unlike the initial thrust that brought millions of ‘techno centric’ folks to the digital water coolers and watering holes of the early web the “new web” has almost no barriers to entry, a far more robust broadband infrastructure, a global reach, and will soon capture all but the most stubborn luddites.

Online community isn’t just big news, it’s great news.

David Boone, missing hiker in California

Map – click here

A family organized search is today, Friday December 15. Details in comments section.
Here’s a blog post from a searcher

Official search was called off after one week. Authorities seem to feel he could not have survived this long.

Based on this and the few other posts I’ve done so far about missing people I think there is a lot more volunteer potential than most normal search and rescue operation even try to coordinate. That’s what we are up to with the DangerData.com blog which is coming soon.

Another discussion is over at City-Data.com (free login required).
Search for “Foothill Ranch” to find that thread – not much there as of Friday Dec 15.

David Boone appears to have become lost during a walk in the “Whiting Ranch” area of Foothill Ranch, CA where he hikes almost every day.

South Carolina couple, missing for days, found dead in North Carolina

Update: The couple have been found dead with their car in a swampy area off I-95.

Here’s a new case of missing people brought to my attention by Tara and Glenn who have been brainstorming ways to avoid the Kim Family tragedy here in Southern Oregon.

You can Digg the Fox News Story to bring more attention to the situation.

Thanks to Glenn here are several more accounts:

In this case foul play seems possible, so it would be nice to have a way for everybody along to route to simply keep their eyes open for a White Mazda with SC plates. I’ll post the police tip line when I find it.

Wayne and Dianne Guay, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., were expected in the Ridgewood section of Queens on Thursday night.

They’d likely have travelled Interstate 95. I wonder if the family/anybody has a way to contact all the hospitals that would take in accidents off that route? I’m a sloppy reader, this is in the article: Family members called state troopers along Interstate 95, the route the couple was expected to take, but there was no word of any accidents.

The dearth of local news was frustrating with the Kim saga and now I’m noticing how hard it is to get good local reports. Part of that is the fact local news is getting replaced by mega media conglomerates like ClearChannel, and part is that Google still sucks for many queries like “Ladysmith VA News” where the top listing is great=topix news, but the next two are advertising for TV and Real Estate sites and worthless.

Climbers missing on Mount Hood, Oregon

OregonLive reports that the search for the missing climbers on Mount Hood has ended. Search for climbers now a “recovery effort”
Hood River County Sheriff Joe Wampler said today the search for two missing climbers on Mount Hood is now a “recovery effort. “We’ve done everything we can at this point,” Wampler said, after returning from a airplane ride around the mountain earlier this morning. Wampler’s decision ended a dramatic nine-day search for three climbers who went missing on Mount Hood on Dec. 11. Earlier this week, the body of one was found in a snow cave near the summit of the 11,240-foot mountain — the second-most climbed in the world. Earlier today, the search for Brian Hall of Texas and Jerry “Nikko” Cooke of New York was scaled back dramatically with no searchers working above the tree line.

As of 11am on Tuesday OregonLive, the online leg of the Oregonian Newspaper, is reporting that the search for the missing climbers on Mount Hood will be scaled back. No more helicopters will search though 2 planes and some ground crews will contine the search for the climbers.

Search for hikers gets scaled back; pictures found in James’ camera worry authorities
Hood River County Sheriff Joe Wampler said today’s search for two missing climbers will be scaled back considerably, and authorities worry that time may be running out to find the men alive.

CNN Sunday

KGW news reports

As of 3:45 Sunday reports are that one climber has been found dead in a snow cave with no sign of the other 2 missing climbers.

As of 11:30 am Saturday the plan is to have a team scale up, then down Mount Hood in attempt to find the three missing climbers, one in snow cave near summit and two with location unknown.

News Release from: Oregon State Police
KIM FAMILY UPDATE #5: MOTHER AND CHILDREN LOCATED; FATHER STILL MISSING
Posted: December 4th, 2006 3:14 PM

On December 4, 2006 at approximately 1:45 p.m., Search & Rescue
officials were notified that a vehicle and a female waving an umbrella were
spotted by a helicopter search crew near the Rogue River in the area of
Bear Camp Viewpoint off Bear Camp Road. This location is near the Curry
/ Josephine County line in Josephine County.

The helicopter was able to land and verified that the mother and two
children were alive. The father reportedly was not with the vehicle.
Additional search crews and resources are being diverted to the area to
help try and locate the father.

The condition of the mother and children is not available but reports
are encouraging. They were flown to a separate location from where they
will be transported to a local hospital to be evaluated for treatment.

No further details are being released at this time.

A second media briefing will tentatively be held at 5:00 p.m. in Merlin
at the Josephine County Search & Rescue Headquarters.

Kim Family update as of 11pm Sunday

[Kati and Kids are safe, James still missing as of 11pm Monday] Updates here.

Updates Monday Morning:

Kim Family Search continues with about 20 (CNET report says 40) searchers and helicopters covering all possible routes to the Coast from Roseburg.

I’m confused about this but assuming the police have rejected as false the report of a Carene Williams of Bandon that she saw the family Nov 27 at Port Orford Price and Pride at 5:12pm. She posted a detailed note at the family site Jamesandkati.com I found a phone for her as part of a house for sale listing in Bandon, Oregon but it’s disconnected and no reply to my emails to her.

——–

Tonight KOBI Channel Five out of Medford reported several new items in a confusing way. I’ll hope to have better detail tomorrow.

3 choppers out of Merlin, hired by Kim’s (father?) continued to search over at the coast. The pilot referenced a report of the family asking for directions in Port Orford (about 30 miles N. of Gold Beach on Highway 101) but it sounded like this report was not clearly about the Kim family. The reporter went on to say Roseburg was the last sighting.

A cell phone “hit” on a tower near Glendale. Authorities appeared to believe this was not enough reason to have them refocus the search in that area.

This was posted by a guest on the www.jamesandkati.com site:

I saw the Kim family at Price and Pride Market on Monday Evening the 27th Of November at 5.12p.m.. I have reported this to the Hotline No. and man y police station s, there were two other sightings at Langlois and The Shell Gas Station in Port Orford. I am so sad and frustrated because I had contact with them and thought what A Wonderful, gracious family. Please God let them be found safe and sound. Carene Williams. cloudsntrees@msn.com

This note explains the reference on tonight’s news to a Port Orford sighting. If true they made it to the coast and spent nights there before going missing, though this seems odd with no cell phone or credit card use. I’m asking Carene via email for more details.

Update: no reply on the email to Carene. I found a number for her via Google search for a house she was selling in Bandon but phone disconnected.
